Saturday 2 March 2013

Saturday, March 2, 2013:  Finally made the trip to Niagara Falls this week, to restart my extended  medical insurance.  I left Thursday at 7:30 a.m., drove my rv to the Ace Park and Ride near Houston, caught their shuttle to the Hobby Airport, flew to Atlanta for a 3 hour stopover, then on to Buffalo, where I took a shuttle to the Inn by the Falls hotel in Niagara Falls. Spent the evening in the hot tub in my room, watching tv.  Friday, I walked and bussed around, found a bank to cash my two cheques from November (insurance refunds that I couldn't cash in Texas), then did the whole trip in reverse.  I wasn't much fun at all - next year I'll book farther ahead and try to get some of my kids and/or friends to come to the Falls to hang out.  Back in Galveston, I just discovered a Megabus which goes from Buffalo International Airport to Toronto for $8:00!!!  Got back to the park around 12:30 Friday night.  Was very happy to be back out of the cold, and went to the breakfast in the clubhouse this morning to be greeted by all kinds of people welcoming me back and asking about my trip - pretty sweet!  I went for a walk on the beach with Susan, Joan and their dog Daisy, then to lunch in the Star Drugstore - the oldest drugstore in Texas, and the first to desegregate!  Awesome place, full of historical artefacts (Coke memorabilia, in particular!), with old-fashioned soda fountain, etc.  After lunch, I had time for a nap (well, actually, I watched a tv show on Netflix) before going up to the clubhouse for cards with 9 other people. Great fun - am now waiting to skype with Julia at 10:00 p.m.  A pretty full day!

More of those horses on the beach - each rider (except the guy at the back) had a small child perched in front of him or her.

Houses along the beach, with Daisy the dog.

The Star Drugstore, showing the second level which is full of historical artefacts.
