Last Saturday was an awesome experience: Dora and Ron took us (about nine people from the camp) to the Bethlehem Walk in the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. We went there last year and I was very excited to get the opportunity again this year!  Outside the church, there was a real live camel, plus sheep and a donkey and shepherds, wise men, centurions and a wedding party, all in period costumes (well, the animals didn't really need to dress up . . . )  Everyone lined up to enter a tent, where a couple gave us the lowdown on the town of Bethlehem - all in character.  From the tent, we proceeded down a dirt path (mulch over the floor of the church hall) which wound among market stalls, where local people explained their wares and children got to sample cheese and candy - and watch rope and pottery and other things being made.  At the end of the path was a little alcove containing Mary & Joseph and the baby Jesus. Quite extraordinarily well done, authentic-feeling and fun!

Sunday, the Moody choir sang all twelve movements of Vivaldi's Gloria - went really well. It was positioned right in the middle of the 11:00 service, which was interesting. I guess that's sort of like the Lessons and Carols service we used to have in the Anglican church. That was always an opportunity to sing lots of anthems and carols. Well, in churches other than my father's, actually - he believed that it was wrong to start celebrating Christmas before the day - so we never sang carols until Christmas Eve (and that's when our Christmas tree went up, too!) It took me years to accept that maybe it was okay to decorate before December 24th! The Gloria was really fun to sing - since it's been a number of years since I last sang it - and I got two rehearsals only to practise - I sang pretty much p or mf most of the time.  Moody has some really good voices - although Tracy had to insert a few ringers into the tenor section, which is a bit thin.

I've put up more decorations this year than I have for a long time - the influence, once again, of Rob and Helen, who decorate like crazy!

My cute little fibre-optic tree - thanks to Mary Lee!

Rob & Helen's RV

Yesterday was a totally down day: I sat outside in the sun for two hours, walked Rob & Helen's dogs (they're in Houston for a few days for her surgery) and booked a hotel in Niagara Falls for Jan. 2 to 4, which took about an hour and a half (researching to get the best deal possible). If anyone happens to be in Niagara Falls at that time, do look me up!

Saturday, December 7,2013

Time is skipping by - I've already been here over a week - sang in the choir last Sunday, went to choir practice last Wednesday and picked up my copy of Vivaldi's Gloria, which we're singing on December 15 - holy crow, that's next Sunday - special practice with the orchestra scheduled for next Saturday. I've already accomplished much more than last year - living next door to Rob and Helen is either an inspiration or a curse - they're both crazy industrious! Rob is always visible outside, working on his rig - or mine!  He washed and treated my whole rv, in exchange for me looking after their three dogs while they're away on a cruise to Hawaii!  Sounds good, but I got a call from Rob yesterday, the day the cruise left from San Diego - Helen fell on the sidewalk across from the ship and fractured bones in her elbow and foot - so they'll be arriving back here in the next few days! As soon as they land in Houston, I'll go pick them up, since I'm also looking after their truck(!)
We had an outdoor bbq for potluck last Wednesday, and Rob and I played our guitars and sang two folk songs.  Rob is just beginning to learn to play guitar, and did very well.
Today was Dickens on The Strand - an annual festival celebrating Charles Dickens in particular and the Victorian era in general.  Local people dress up in period costume (wearing a costume gets you 50% off the admission fee). Ron and Dora drove any campground people who wanted to come, in the camp van.  We had lunch at Fudruckers, and had an awesome time! There were scads of people there, despite the very cold weather (around 42 fahrenheit; roughly 5 celcius), but  noticeably fewer street vendors, which was a shame.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!!! This morning I got up at 6:45 and looked out the window just to make sure that this isn't a dream - I'm really here.  I saw Ron in the office later and told him that I woke up to realize that I'm still here and he said "Well, was there some reason why you wouldn't be here?" Not sure that he understood my giggles at that . . .
I had a shower this morning and did laundry, figured out how to get the annoying ad banners off the top of this blog (thanks to Rob's advice last night) and realized that, for the first time since Nov. 11th, I can actually post on this blog! I went to Thanksgiving dinner at 11:30 (Dora booked me in at the same time as Rob and Helen) and it was, as usual, an incredible feast! I spent the rest of the afternoon uploading photos from my iPad to my laptop, preparatory to putting them into this blog.  At 6:00, I went to the clubhouse for dinner of leftovers, then came back and starting updating my blog.  I just got to today, so I'm actually up to date!!  Life is good!

Finally - I feel like I've come home!  The first person I saw here was Dora, who came running to give me a hug!  It's so awesome to be back - I spent some time walking around, checking out the new spa - saw Chris - another hug.  My spot is 29, right next to Rob and Helen. Rob showed up about an hour after I got there and we spent some time beginning to catch up - then Helen came home from the doctor's (bronchitis again and back problems) and we had dinner together (Rob and I went out and brought back hamburgers from the Blue Water Grill down the street).  We chatted for a few hours, then I went back to my rv and skyped with Sherry - on dependable wifi for once!!!

Tuesday, November 26th

Got to Corpus Christi on Monday - wifi is practically non-existent.  I rented a car yesterday and went to see Catching Fire, which came out last Friday.  Well done, although really one should read the book before seeing this movie - so much is left out and necessary for a good understanding of the plot. I'm not really impressed with Corpus Christi - rather shabby city - nothing really interesting here, although rvers seem to love it - not sure why.  I did drive up and down South Padre Island, which I've heard so much about - and it was pretty and wild and windswept - but I kept asking myself why on earth I was here, when Galveston was so close! I did visit an awesome, eclectic shop in Port Aransas, chockfull of absolutely delightful stuff! It's called Gratitude and is run by a wonderful woman with partially pink hair and a bubbly, outrageous personality. Wish I could have spent hours there! However, I had to take the rental car back - and then I phoned Jamaica Beach and asked if I could come early (I was booked in for Sunday).  Poor Ron sputtered a bit, but somehow, I think by dint of juggling other people, booked me in to the site that Rob and I had booked back in April. (I had completely forgotten that this is Thanksgiving weekend, one of their busiest times, so the park was pretty much full!) Anyhow, tomorrow I'm making the last leg of my journey and settling in at Galveston!!!!!

Driving on the beach is always a cool experience!

Sunday, November 24th

Left San Antonio to go to Edinburg to visit my friend June - but just couldn't locate her campground, despite the efforts of the kind lady in the office to give me directions over the phone!  I think I put the wrong street into my GPS, because it took me to East Palm Drive in Edinburg, instead of to Lazy Palm drive 17 miles outside of Edinburg. I finally gave up in frustration and decided to head for Corpus Christi instead.
I found an RV park on the way - Countryside RV - really quite nice - clean and quiet despite being right next to the highway.  Will get to Corpus Christi tomorrow!

Saturday, November 23rd

Woke up  Saturday morning to a temp of 27 - that's minus 3 celcius - below freezing!! Yep - this is the weather I thought I left behind in Ontari-ari-ario! This was definitely a grumpy day - lots of frost on the grass and cacti - not inspiring to drive through.  I was glad to get to the Braunig Lake RV Resort just outside of San Anntonio, Texas -weather was chilly, but much, much warmer!
Had breakfast in the community room here - very nice RV park - I'd like to stay here again some day.

Frost!

More frost

Yuck!
