We drove north from the Icefields Parkway to Grande Cache, where we went to the Visitors Centre, then found a spot off the road about 10 km. down the highway. Nice spot, nestled amongst the green and the mountains. We drove in to Grande Cache to see the awesome labyrinth there, and to take the short walk to the nearby falls. From here, we drove through Grande Prairie and on to Dawson Creek, BC. Parked in a Walmart parking lot, along with a number of rvs and semis, and spent Canada Day in nearby Pouce Coupe, just chilling in the big field full of tents, singing groups, food and games kiosks - just a laid back local celebration. I loved it, although I had about an hour-long dizzy, wonky time and had to sit in the shade during that time.
On June 2nd, we drove into town and had our photos taken in front of the Mile 0 signpost, indicating the beginning of the Alaska Highway. We watched a video about the building of the highway - a daunting task for American army guys, most of whom had no clue how to build a road, let alone clear timber - but they actually accomplished this in 9 months- record time for inexperienced men working in very rough conditions! It was finished in 1942.
